A round Hirado porcelain plate with two auspicious carp on a pristine white ground. One carp rendered in fine cobalt detailing, the other in white moriage with each scale well-defined. Sprays of leafy vines and peony flowers in under glaze cobalt decorate the back of the plate. This Hirado porcelain plate is striking for the purity of the porcelain and the simple, yet elegant design. In addition, East Asian cultures associate the carp (koi) to prosperity and achievement. Very good condition, with no loss or damage. Slight kiln mark on reverse. Diameter: 9.5” 19th Century, Japan
