A round iron tsuba with a carved ji-sukashi (surface) design of abalone shells (awabi). A gilt-inlaid abstract pattern runs along the edge and outlines the hitsu-ana (openings for the kogai and kozuka.) Since ancient times, Japan harvested abalone shells both for medicinal and aesthetic purposes, their designs frequently used as motifs on kimono, lacquer, prints, etc. This fine tsuba is an Echizen Kinai -School piece. Overall, it is in very good condition with only minor wear to the gilt. Edo Period (circa 1750), Japan
