Stoneware Vase with Bamboo by Makuzu Kozan
A stoneware vase of compressed form and wide shoulders decorated in the style of the 17th Century master Kyoto potter, Ninsei Nonomura. Renowned Yokohama-based ceramicist Makuzu Kozan centuries later took his own approach to the work of Ninsei, which is reflected in this stoneware piece. An iron-rich tenmoku glaze runs down the sides of the vase to create a mottled, spontaneous effect. The rest of the body is embellished with bamboo leaves in lustrous colored-glazes and gilt details, contrasting markedly with the textured, unglazed ground. This important artwork is in excellent condition with neither damage nor restoration and includes tomobako. Makuzu Kozan glazed-signature cartouche can be found on the base. Height: 6, diameter: 9.5 Late Meiji Period, Japan
