An ovoid-shaped copper-patinated bronze vase with a mysterious nocturnal scene rendered in silver, shakudo and shibuichi. A fabulous moriage moth, naturalistically executed in gold, silver and shibuichi, flutters about a branch of wisteria, a silvery full moon in the background. (Butterflies have a long-standing tradition in Japan as symbols of joy and longevity. In addition, butterflies were a popular heraldic motif.) This elegant and poetic vase is in very good condition with no problems. Height: 8.5” Meiji Period, Japan
