A stained-wood netsuke beautifully carved to denote the tender relationship between a yearling and its parent. The young horse struggles to mount the back of the recumbent parent, who turns to gaze at it lovingly. This netsuke’s fine incised work for the hair and deep undercutting for the mane and tails immediately define the style and modeling as the work of the well-known netsuke carver, Kokei. It has an old hair line running down the back of the parent, as expected, because of handling and age. Mid-Edo Period, Japan
