An exquisite small, gold-lacquered covered incense box with leafy tendrils surrounded by clouds on a kinji ground. Accents are rendered in gold kirikane and silver with dense nashiji interiors. At the top right-hand corner a Tale of Genji chapter mon is worked in relief.(This box probably was part of a set prepared for a lady’s wedding trousseau).This gold-lacquer box is in excellent condition with a museum’s accession number on the bottom. Provenance: Toledo Museum collection. Length: 2”, width: 2” Meiji Period, Japan
