A maki-e box portraying one of Japan’s most beloved birds, the chidori (plover). Here, the plovers flitter among harvested rice and wild flowers, a stream on a polished kinji ground along the sides. The birds’ plumage is delicately defined and worked in silver lacquer, the interiors enhanced with dense nashiji gold flakes. Includes owner’s fitted kiri-wood box. This marvelous lacquer box is in excellent condition. Height, 5.5"; length, 5.5" Meiji Period, Japan
