A stained boxwood netsuke of a cicada perched upon part of a walnut. This fine netsuke concentrates on great naturalistic detailing of the wings and walnut skin, resulting in an amazingly life-like representation. (In Japanese art forms, cicada symbolize summer’s end and the renewal of life.) This boldly-carved netsuke is unsigned, attributed to the Nagoya school. It is in excellent condition. Length: 1.5” 19th Century, Japan
