A lovely stained wood netsuke of two playful mice, one seated with tail beneath him, the other crawling upon his friend’s back. Their bodies are formed and finely incised, eyes inlaid with jet. (Rats are not only the first sign of the Chinese zodiac, but also symbols of fertility and wealth in East Asia. In Japan, the rat /mouse is an emblem of good luck and companion of the beloved god of wealth, Daikoku.) This netsuke is in very good condition. Height: 1”, width: 1.25” Edo Period, Japan
