A charming carved- wood okimono in the form of a barrel filled with koi. Bent over its lid, a karako (Chinese boy) is intent upon extracting a carp from the interior, the latter inlaid with mother-of-pearl. This unusual carving boasts extensive and intricate detailing on the karako’s robes and on the drum slung upon his back. The cover opens to reveal a compartment for storage. This imaginative box in the style of an okimono is in excellent condition. Height: 8” Meiji Period, Japan
