 Sod - Many thanks!
An oval, black-lacquered wooden plaque decorated with carved boxwood masks of the 16 Rakans (attendants to Buddha), gold-lacquered descriptions on the sides. Each face is carved with great detail and expression as seen in typical depictions of these religious ascetics. Though each face is rendered with a different expression, all share similar characteristics: the shaven heads, aged faces with long eyebrows, large ears and individually carved facial features. This fine plaque is in very good condition with only slight surface wear due to age. Length: 23”, width: 15” Circa 1810 (Edo Period), Japan
