An expressive boxwood mask netsuke of the celebrated, delightfully controversial Okame. The renowned netsuke-shi Shumin carved Okame’s famously cheerful face with delicate incisions for the hair, modeling of the cheeks, perky nose and warm smile. Shumin I signature incised on reverse side. This lovely netsuke is in excellent condition. (The netsuke artist Shumin I was from the Kansei region and a pupil of Shuzan or Shugetsu II.) Length: 2” Late 18th/19th Century, Japan
