A stained boxwood katabori netsuke sculpted as a Sambaso dancer. The dancer wears characteristic high hat and formal attire. He is caught in mid-dance, one foot in the air with arms bent back and head turned upwards. (Sambaso dance originated in the 9th century as a religious dance. It is often performed before a drama to appease the gods so the errors committed during the play will be forgiven.) Incised signature on lower leg of Minko, renowned netsuke-shi. This lovely netsuke is in excellent condition. Height: 2". 19th Century, Japan.
