A stained boxwood netsuke carved as a conch shell, its top surface revealing a miniature world inside. The image of a textured temple complex with two towers surmounted by double koi is ingeniously carved in relief, a small clam shell attached to the side. Fascinating images of structures and bustling life in a conch shell refer to the Japanese legend of the Dragon King of the sea and his underwater kingdom. This netsuke is in very good condition with no damage, its incised signature on reverse. Length: 2” 19th Century, Japan
