An impressive Mingei style stoneware jar with pierced cover and rattan-woven handle. A multi-hued flambé glaze drips along the vessel’s dark-body and exaggerated, upturned spout. (This distinctive style of pottery and stoneware arose during the early 20th Century as a result of Japan’s rapid shift to industrialization and mechanical processes. A group of Japanese artists sought to retain Japan’s ancient methods of pottery-making, thereby creating Japan’s great “Folk Art” movement – with emphasis upon “hand-crafted” arts relating to the “old”. This wondrous covered jar is in excellent condition. Height: 21” Early 20th Century, Japan
