This is a fabulous wood-framed copper plaque depicting Hotei, one of the most popular of the Seven Lucky Gods of Fortune. (Associated with happiness and love of children, Hotei is often portrayed in Japanese art with a jovial expression, large belly and sack of "Precious Things.") The scene on this plaque is executed in copper, silver and gilt, its deep carving creating rich shadows simulating a sculptural figure in the round. This plaque is excellent condition with no scratches, dents, restoration, etc. Height: 11.25", width: 10" Meiji Period, Japan
