A wondrous bamboo ikebana basket of wagumi style woven with wide, ribbon-like bamboo slats. Along its oval-formed body strings of reed and roped bamboo weave in and out, while twisted whole sections of bamboo form a strong and well- poised handle. This indigenous form of basketry- making in Japan, called wagumi-style, was inspired by the daily baskets made by fishermen and farmers, seduced by their organic and uninhibited forms. These richly- designed baskets, robustly woven, later elevated the style to an art form. This powerful basket is unsigned. It is in very good condition. Height: 26” Meiji Period, Japan
