A richly-lacquered gold suzuribako designed with the noted Mt. Yoshino site famous for its cherry blossom display during Japan’s sakura-viewing season. The kinji cover of this scholar’s box is sculpted in highest relief in gold and silver lacquers of hills, rockwork and sakura trees. On the lid’s interior, brilliantly lacquered, are a teahouse among wild flowers, bamboo and pine. A silver suiteki in the form of double huts completes the imagery. This splendid gold lacquered suzuribako is in very good condition with only minor surface wear on the cover due to age and use. Length: 11.25” 19th Century, Japan
