A unique boxwood netsuke carved as three long-armed gibbons encircling a giant persimmon. This whimsical netsuke refers to the fabled adventure of a monkey who steals a persimmon from a crab. Great modeling, staining and distinctive texturing characterize this artwork. The simian’s fur is finely delineated, the eyes inlaid with jet. This fine netsuke is signed by the Aizu school artist Hiddari Issan (c. 1781-1800), described by Reikichi as an “excellent carver”. This charming netsuke is in excellent condition. Diameter: 1.5” Early 19th Century, Japan
