This is an extraordinary gold maki-e natsume (tea container) inlaid with aogai, or mother-of-pearl. On its body and lid, a continuous scene, intricately executed, shows chrysanthemums blossoming over a checkerboard fence. The interior is done in dense nashiji "pear-skin" technique. With original fitted kiri-wood box. The natsume is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. Height: 2.75", diameter: 2.75" Late Meiji/Early Taisho Period, Japan
