This is a lacquer kogo (box) finely modeled as a thirteen-stringed koto, Japan's national instrument. The kogo exhibits its strings and movable bridges in gold and red-colored lacquer hiramaki-e (low relief). This exquisite lacquer work is executed in gold and silver lacquer and simulates the grained surface of the kiriwood instrument, itself. The interior, a luxurious nashiji ground. The kogo is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or restoration. Length: 6" Meiji Period, Japan
