A stained boxwood netsuke of “san sukumi” (the three cringing ones), comprising a snake wrapped around a frog, a snail atop. This amusing theme was a beloved one by Japanese netsuke carvers. Here, the artist Sari (c.1790-1820) of the Iwashiro School ingeniously carved the frog’s eyes in relief as the snake squeezes tightly. This netsuke features a natural himotoshi and is in excellent condition with marvelous provenance: Ex. Warner & Ex. M.T. Hindson collections. The netsuke is also featured in Davey’s book, “Netsuke”, page 258. The MCI by Frederick Meinertzhagen describes Sari as “outstanding”. Early 19th Century, Japan
