An imposing Satsuma pottery vase of compressed mei-ping form with two large cartouches on a cobalt and gilt-patterned ground. With great dexterity and realism, an official scene of samurai and lords marching and gathering under one roof is rendered in myriads of enamel colors and gilt. In complete contrast, the second cartouche reveals the warmth and innocence of children playing with their mothers near the banks of a lake under maple and pine trees. Large, gilt signature seal of Ryuzan can be found on the base. This thoughtful and well-executed vase is in excellent condition with only slight rubbing to the gilt due to age and handling. Height: 13”, diameter: 12” Meiji Period, Japan
