An amusing stained boxwood netsuke of a “tanuki no tzsumi”. The badger beats his belly in order to attract and ambush hunters and innocent travelers. Finely incised fur with sumi-e details and inlaid mother-of-pearl eyes. (The badger in Japanese folklore has strong erotic connotations, his expanded belly suggestive of his scrotum.) Signed Shunko of Tsu School. Shunko was a pupil of Tanaka Minko. This mischievous badger is in excellent condition with neither damage nor repairs. Circa 1800, Japan Length: 1.5”, height: 1.5”
