This is a Koto Period tanto in full koshirae with soft metal fittings and glossy black-lacquered saya, its handle wrapped in slate- blue silk cords. The small, mokko-shaped shakudo tsuba is overlaid with gilt spays of grass and plum blossoms. In similar fashion, the fuchi kashira are also overlaid with gold to create images of huts by a meandering stream and grove of kiku; iron menuki sculpted as foliage with gilt details. The blade is in very good condition with silver habaki engraved with Greek-fret design. 15th Century (Koto Period), Japan
