An ingeniously -carved wood netsuke formed as a half- clam shell, its exterior marked with fine, incised ridges and, for added realism, an uneven edge. Lurking in the shell’s recess on its nether side is a wily octopus, its strong boldly -carved tentacles awaiting its prey. Netsuke carvers were fond of the mollusk and often depicted it in various humorous scenarios. This netsuke is in very good condition and will be a wonderful contribution to any netsuke collection. Length: 2” 19th Century, Japan
