A large four-sided Satsuma vase of high-shouldered, tapered form with its panels framed by kiku scrollwork. The ‘thousand cranes’ motif is finely painted in rich sumi-e style, its panels representing glorious paintings of temples, retreats, craggy mountains and gnarled trees. Brilliant moriage kiku bloom in groves alongside tall iris, their foliage bold against the gold-sprinkled ground. Ryozan and Yasuda Company trademarks’ cartouche in gilt on the base. This vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Height: 12 ¼” Meiji Period, Japan
