A whimsical subject is brought to life in this boxwood “oni nembutsu” netsuke. The mischievous demon, imploring, crouches at the feet of a priest, who ceremoniously proceeds to remove the demon’s horns. The priest’s somber expression contrasts with the almost comical and exaggerated features of the oni. As with most of Masakazu’s work, this netsuke is highly detailed. Masakazu (1868-1911) studied carving under Masanao and became as is evident by this example, a talented netsuke carver. This netsuke is in excellent condition. Height: 1.75”. Meiji Period, Japan
