A charming wood netsuke of a seated monkey holding a giant chestnut in his long arms, legs clasped together for support. The body and features of this netsuke are deftly modeled to emphasize the creature’s key features and innocent expression. (Simians were beloved subjects with netsuke-shi, who carved imaginative renderings of this admired animal often engaged in various and amusing, pursuits.) This monkey has a beautiful patina and good wear, a barely discernible chip on his back commensurate with age and use. Unsigned. Height: 1.5”, width: 1.5” Edo Period (late 18th Century), Japan 5-363
