A fine wood netsuke of a man in loincloth wrestling a badger in mid-transformation. Kneeling, he restrains the mischievous badger as it shape-shifts into a teapot, lid and side handles visible. However, the badger’s bushy tail is a giveaway. The resulting triumphal grin on the man’s face exhibits the carver’s psychological acumen and technical skill. (Badgers in Japanese folklore are notorious for their rather devious power to shape-shift. ) This netsuke is in excellent condition with rich patina & no problems. Height: 1.5”, length: 1.5” 19th Century, Japan
