This is an ingenious copper-patinated bronze and silver incense burner formed as a bamboo ikebana basket and used possibly in a shrine setting. The exterior is a tour-de-force of mat woven bronze with the rim executed in herring bone design, the interior silvered. The double -reed handles rise from the base of the basket and join at the top. This rare basket, signed with multi-characters on the bottom ,SEI SEIDO, shows signs of use on its silver interior but is in excellent condition otherwise, with no dents, or restoration. The basket includes its storage box. Height: 10.5" Meiji Period, Japan
