A baluster-shaped studio porcelain vase rendered with the beloved imagery of koi swimming upstream – ubiquitous in fine Japanese art. The high-fired vitreous porcelain glistens with koi in soft washes of gray, mauve and aubergine as they swim in and out of gently rippling waters. This auspicious imagery symbolic of perseverance and success is rendered on a pale green ground. This classic vase is the work of the renowned Imperial court artist Makuzu Kozan, his artist seal on the base. Height: 13.5” Meiji Period, Japan
