A beautiful Imari porcelain plate formed as two fish, each one a mirror-image of the other - heads, fins and tails in attractive under glaze blue. The bodies display sprays of chrysanthemums and a cherry blossom branch, two flittering songbirds above. With gilt detailing throughout, the reverse is decorated with seaweed and clam shells in blue, green and iron red enamels. (The symbolism of the two fish refers to conjugal felicity.) This Imari plate is in very good condition with only minor wear to the gilt. Length: 9â€, width: 8†19th Century, Japan
