A naturalistically carved wood netsuke sculpted as a toad astride an overturned bucket. This classic netsuke theme was popular among the netsuke carvers, especially favored by the famous Masanao school. In addition, the theme is inspired by the Basho proverb, “A frog in a well knows not the great seaâ€, describing a person of limited experience. Nonetheless, toads and frogs are venerated in East Asian cultures as symbols of good luck and persistence. Incised Masatama signature on base. This netsuke is in excellent condition. 19th Century, Japan
