A Satsuma okimono sculpted as a recumbent tiger. Even if its position seems at ease, this tiger still commands respect and attention, appearing to roar—teeth, fangs and tongue exposed. Executed in the traditional clay-crackled glaze with gilt detailing, the beast’s overall mien is impressive. Typically executed in bronze, Japanese tiger sculptures were always popular with Western collectors, in the 19th century and now. However, Satsuma renderings of this subject are rare. Tiger is in very good condition with minor wear due to age. Base signed Kizan with Shimazu mon. Length: 10” Meiji Period, Japan
