This is an ingenious boxwood netsuke modeled as the Okina mask used in Noh drama. The netsuke exhibits deep carving for the wrinkles along the forehead, eyes and mouth. (Okina is often portrayed as a jovial old man with a movable jaw attached by a cord, exuding happiness and portrayed with tufts of hair on his eyebrows and chin.) This miniature sculpture of Okina has a delicate white cord attached to its jaw, allowing it to be moved. It is signed DEME UMAN TENKA ICHI on reverse and is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or restoration. This wonderful Okina makes a excellent addition to any netsuke collection. 19th Century, Japan
