A wood netsuke sculpted as a traditional Noh mask of a Heian Period beauty, its concept of female beauty differing from standards in the West. The mask is modeled with an exquisitely- small nose and mouth, finely delineated eyes and high eyebrows. (During the 6th century, Japanese women strove to attain a fair, porcelain-like face through the use of make-up, their eyebrows painted high on the forehead and teeth blackened.) This fine netsuke features rich patination and is in excellent condition. Length: 2” 19th Century, Japan
