A rare soft-metal tsuba set of the Nagatsune school overlaid with gilt, shakudo and silver detailing. Images of the legendary Battle of Uji River are executed on a shibuichi migaki ground utilizing takazogan, takabori and shishiaibori techniques. Samurai in full regalia traverse the river’s rapids on horseback, while samurai on boats battle opposing clan members with swords. The set includes tsuba, kozuka handle, pair of menuki and fuchi kashira housed in a wood tomobako with silk pillow. Nagatsune (Sato Kanzan) incised signature on tsuba. This important set is in excellent condition. Edo Period (18th Century), Japan
