An oval-shaped soft metal tsuba with the great Heian poet Prince Narihara and his courtiers crossing a stream on horseback. The event, so complex upon so small a surface, with flowers, attendants, mountains, waters and rockwork, is accentuated through the liberal use of gold, silver, shakudo and copper. On the reverse side, an attendant bends to drink from the waters. This fine tsuba is in very good condition with minor surface wear on reverse. Length: 2.75”, width: 2.5” 19th Century, Japan
