A powerful, stunningly-executed stained boxwood okimono of Ono-no-Komachi, 9th Century poetess of legendary beauty, seated upon a battered log. Portrayed here as an aged figure with tattered clothes, old wide-brimmed hat upon her back and bamboo staff in hand, her dramatically carved expression indicates a life-long agony for her lost love. (One of the Six Famous Poets—Rokkasen—Komachi rejected all suitors and went into seclusion after her true love died.) Incised signature of Masanori on base. This rare boxwood okimono is in excellent condition. Height: 9.75”, width: 6” Meiji Period, Japan
