A humorous wood netsuke sculpted as a lecherous man atop a giant clam struggling to free his fundoshi from the clam’s grip. The connotation in this study, erotic in tone, alludes to the clam’s reference in Japanese art to the private anatomy of the female. In this case, the trapped fundoshi signifies the man’s entrapment into marriage. This well-done netsuke carving is in excellent condition. Height: 1.5”, width: 1.75” 19th Century, Japan
