An iconic three-legged porcelain bowl encircled by a group of "talking" songbirds in delicate tones of rose, soft gray and black enamels. During the 1890s, Kozan employed his distinctive "fukie" painterly style for which he was known and honored. In this exquisite work, the lively portrayal of the songbirds is enhanced through the use of this novel technique - an innovation way before its time - resulting in this ceramic masterpiece. Characteristic Makuzu Kozan I under glaze blue signature seal located on base. Provenance: A private New York City collection. In addition, the porcelain bowl is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration. Height: 3.25", diameter: 6" Circa 1900, Japan
