 Sold, many thanks!
A beautifully-modeled ebony netsuke formed as a recumbent ox, its eyes, doubly-inlaid. This specially-carved netsuke of a classic netsuke subject, made even more special because of the carver’s empathy in regard to the creature, itself, is modeled with extensive attention to the fine hair work, sculpted backbone, legs and hooves. Even the casually laid rope along the animal’s back appears real enough to hold in one’s hand. Faint signature cartouche on nether side is of Hakuryu I, Kyoto School. Provenance: Roger Weston Collection. This fine netsuke is in excellent condition. Length: 2†19th Century, Japan
