A unique Imari porcelain shallow bowl of octagonal form rendered with a rich iron red ground in a matte finish with gilt details. Each cartouche is delicately framed with a gilt border exhibiting the following images: gilt paulownia karakusa, two Chinese boys carrying a gourd and banner, Japanese characters on a stylized wave-patterned ground, and assorted rondels with images of stylized flowers and a hut flanked by pine. Underglaze blue abstract design can be seen on reverse. This rare Imari piece is in very good condition with only minor surface wear, commensurate with age and use. Length: 12”, width: 11.75” Circa 1860, Japan
