A boldly carved wood netsuke of a seated dog, its ears perked up and body resting on one hind leg. The dog’s coat is finely incised, an inlaid bone collar adorning its neck. On the nether side, the regal creature’s paws are carefully delineated, the incised signature of Hokusui on its hind leg. (Dogs are not only the eleventh Chinese zodiac sign, but also are honored as deities in Japanese folklore.) This netsuke is in very good condition with only minor signs of age. Height: 1.75” Edo Period, Japan
