A dramatic, full-bodied bronze vase with iron-like surface, its subject three large koi exquisitely chiseled in high and low relief, their eyes inlaid with gilt and shakudo. (In Japanese symbolism, the carp (koi) is portrayed swimming upwards, cresting over foamy waters or against the currents of a waterfall. This vivid imagery is emblematic of determination and eventual success.) The master, Watanabe Shihon’s chiseled signature on the base. This impressive vase is in excellent condition.
