A stained boxwood netsuke formed as a Noh mask of a Heian beauty. The Beauty’s features are finely delineated with delicate incised lines and smoothly carved details. The facial features are characteristic of the concept of ideal beauty during the Heian times. (The Japanese women of 6th century Heian Period strove to attain a fair, porcelain-like face with the help of white-powdered make-up, their teeth blackened and eyebrows painted high on the forehead.) This netsuke is an excellent example of the genre and is in very good condition with no repair and no problems. Length: 2” 19th century, Japan
