A naturally carved ebony netsuke formed as a cicada atop a weathered piece of bamboo, the head, wings and thorax infinitely detailed. The master artist retained the integrity of the wood by keeping its natural striations and weathered appearance. (In Japanese art forms, the cicada symbolizes summer’s end and the renewal of life.) This boldly carved netsuke is in excellent condition with rich patina and natural wear, commensurate with age and use. Length: 2” 19th Century, Japan
