A finely hand-woven maru obi (ceremonial obi for kimono) rendered on both sides in quiet earthy tones of greens, mauve, blue, brown and ochre on a gray silk ground. Additional highlights of burgundy, beige, red and orange throughout the fabric and extensive shadowing add dimension and variation for an overall luxurious effect. The obi focuses on the rich imagery of a peacock with dramatic tail feathers posing among peonies and chrysanthemums on broad, leafy stalks. This elegant obi is in excellent condition. Length: 148.5†, width: 12.5†Late Meiji / Taisho Period, Japan
