A small Bizen okimono of a reclining Saru Mawashi (monkey trainer) with a small macaque holding a basket atop a sack. This okimono is carved in fantastic detail, exaggerating the wrinkled features of the man's face, the voluminous folds of his cloak and detailed fur on the macaque. Bizen pottery's naturally iron-rich composition is aptly selected for this artwork: reddish-brown color and iron-like hardness with mottled markings visible. on its surface. This okimono is in good condition with minor wear consistent with age. Length: 3" Edo Period, Japan
